LA PUENTE — A man who walked away from the Male Community Reentry Program (MCRP) in Los Angeles County on Saturday, April 21, was apprehended Wednesday, April 25.
Following investigative leads, agents from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Special Service Unit (SSU) Rancho Cucamonga learned that Richard Tarin, 30, was possibly at Bassett Park, in the city of La Puente. SSU agents, with the assistance of the Los Angeles Fugitive Apprehension Team, responded and saw Tarin in the park, walking toward a vehicle. Tarin was taken into custody without incident at approximately 3:10 p.m. and transported to California Institution for Men in Chino. This case will be referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for their consideration in the issuance of a criminal complaint.
Tarin had been participating in the MCRP, which allows eligible offenders committed to state prison to serve the end of their sentences in the reentry center and provides them the programs and tools necessary to transition from custody to the community. It is a voluntary program for male offenders who have approximately 12 months left to serve. The program links offenders to a range of community-based rehabilitative services that assist with substance use disorders, mental health care, medical care, employment, education, housing, family reunification and social support.
Tarin was admitted from Los Angeles County on Nov. 27, 2013, to serve a five-year eight-month sentence for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing great bodily injury. He had been participating in MCRP since April 3, 2018, and was scheduled to be released to parole supervision in November 2018.
The Office of Correctional Safety mission is to protect the public and serve CDCR investigative and security interests. OCS is the primary departmental link with allied law enforcement agencies and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.
Since 1977, 99 percent of all offenders who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended.
